Re: Scholarship for Deenish Raj a/l Rajendran]

Dear Mr. Narayanan

Whilst I sympathise (with reservations) with the applicant and his family on the situation they face, we must not disregard the fact they went in with open eyes, and I must say, very foolishly. This is a situation I have seen with Indian families time and again. It is a disease with us - every family, whether if can afford it or not, wants it's child to do medicine. Our community squanders it's meagre resources on temples, entertainment, and medical degrees.

I believe very strongly that we who manage public funds, have a responsibility to ensure those funds reach as many children as possible. I am therefore against the granting of the loan.

Thank you for the detailed explanation.I for  now have a clear understanding of the scholarship committee  decision on the award.
It was in view of this absence of clarity on the award that the MC requested we re look at this particular case.
In light of your clear explanation I would be more than happy to concur with you and recommend that the MC accept the recommendation of this award.

Dear Mr. Koh,

If you had put up a brief on the discussion at the Scholarship committee on how and why the amount was to be given to the applicant, I am sure the Management Committee would have viewed the decision differently.

However, I hope the explanation given here will enlighten the members of  the Management Committee.

While it is good to spread the amount among few applicants, it is also good to ensure the applicant is not faced with difficulty in obtaining the short fall for their need.

This is the first time the society is considering such an application for doing medicine. The President's view was that since we have the monies in the scholarship fund, we should consider the applicant's request.

    1. The applicant had obtained PTPTN loan for an amount of RM150,000. The College had also given a scholarship for the Foundation course. Thus, the remaining amount that he need to complete the five year course was RM135,000.

2. The Committee felt that since he had obtained excellent  results and not from a rich family, it would be an additional burden for him to obtain another loan with interest. (besides paying for the PTPTN loan).

3.Therefore, the committee unanimously decided to give it as a LOAN without interest instead of a scholarship. By doing so, the Fund will be replenished over the period and will be available for other deserving students. The committee further recommends that the amount be released annually on condition of him obtaining good results.

3. The other compelling reason was to avoid the unnecessary tension for the applicant and his family on the uncertainty of sourcing for the additional amount.

4. The committee encouraged him to seek scholarship from various other sources and if successful, there will be no need for the society to continue with this scheme.

5. The applicant was highly recommended by the President and the committee justly felt it is a worthy case to consider.

6.  The annual commitment is RM30,000.

7. The Society's scholarship fund has not been given out for a long time and has been left to accumulate interest. Thus the committee concurred with the President to give out scholarships or loans to deserving applicants based on their academic performance with the family background as an important criteria.

In this case the applicant qualified for the scholarship. Since the amount is large the committee recommended an interest-free loan.

Therefore, the scholarship committee would appeal to the Management  committee to accept the proposal as it is.

Thank you

Yours in service.

Dear Mr. Narayanan,
At the last MC meeting on 3rd May, 2013, MC had requested that the Scholarship Board reconsider the  award of scholarship of RM135,000 for Deenish Raj a/l Rajendran to do his medical course. The amount of payout will be amortized over 5 years. The fund is to be taken from Girlie Tan Education Fund. The MC felt it will be fairer if the scholarship from the fund be given to more applicants rather than one person only.. Please inform me if you wish to have another Scholarship Board Meeting to discuss this matter. Otherwise, can replies or views through e-mails be okay.? There is a need to give a clear report to the MC on how the decision was made for this award.  The next MC meeting is 1st June, 2013.  Kindly revert.

RE: Scholarship for Deenish Raj a/l Rajendran]

Hi All,

I have a personal experience which I would like to share. I returned to Home when I was about 20 years old as I wanted very much to realize my ambition to become a Doctor, a dream held since I was about 9 years old.

The opportunities back then for local degree was limited to public university and only those with straight As in STPM will have a chance. In addition, the cost for foreign university is about few hundred thousand dollars. In the next 2 years, I sat for Indonesia entrance exam (1x), applied to India Gov (2x) as well as local university (1x) in addition to repeating the STPM exam by self study while giving tuition at the Home. Mother have personally accompanied me to seek help and we went as far as to meet the MCA chief who was the Minister of Transport. It is unfortunate that my STPM results is not good enough do to medicine in local university but I got an opportunity to do Science (Microbiology) at University of Malaya. And thanks to Mother, Home, Malaysian Sheet Glass and Mr & Mrs Perumal,   I was given a scholarship and allowance to enable me to move forward.

Even though I had a missed opportunity, I would support those with this ambition. However, we need to have a good plan since there are many deserving cases out there. I recently came across my wife’s relative daughter who has been a straight As student since UPSR who obtained 9As for SPM. Her father have passed away and the family lives in the palm oil plantation in Bekok. She has applied for local university for matriculation but not successful. She is applying for Foundation in Science course at AIMST University and if successful, I look forward to sponsor her in this course. However, she needs help to continue to study medicine and I hope we could help as well.

If I may, I would like to suggest that all successful applicants be encouraged to volunteer at least 50% of their vacation time at the Home during their studies as part of giving back. In addition, we have to be realistic about repayment options since applicant would have to pay 250k after graduation although the repayment for PTPN is 20 years. One idea is to have an option for the applicant to serve the Home after graduation (of course post housemanship) as in-house medical officer and we could use this to organize community out-reach programs.

Thanks

Best Regards

Jackie
